KULAI: A motorsports influencer was among eight individuals remanded for four days over their alleged involvement in a viral video showing a stretch of the Second Link Highway here being closed to allow an illegal motorcycle race.
The suspects, aged between 26 and 45 years old, were brought to a Kulai Magistrate’s Court at about 8.30am on Monday (Aug 24).
Magistrate R. Salini issued the remand order, which runs until Thursday (Aug 27), following an application by police under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The remand was sought to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
All eight suspects wore face masks when they arrived at the court. Two of them, including the influencer, also wore hoodies to avoid being filmed.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the suspects were arrested at 11.54am on Sunday (Aug 23) by a team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kulai district police headquarters.
The arrests followed the circulation of a 33-second video showing two motorcyclists allegedly racing on the highway.
The incident is believed to have taken place between KM33, near the Senai Utara toll exit, and KM31, near the Johor Premium Outlet (JPO) exit.
The video also showed several individuals allegedly blocking the highway to allow the race to take place.
The suspects were also seen setting off firecrackers to celebrate the end of the race.
Several individuals, including the influencer, were later seen standing by the roadside after the race had ended.
Police are investigating the incident under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless and dangerous driving.
