Lucky draw opens door to tens of thousands in losses

A CONVENIENCE store worker lost RM72,467 after falling victim to a scam that began with a free set of knives, China Press reported.

Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said the 33-year-old woman received the knives by post on Oct 11.

A few days later, she received a call from a man claiming the knives were part of a lucky draw and that recipients had been added to a Telegram group where they could earn generous fees by completing product-review tasks.

After completing 30 reviews, the woman was told she was entitled to RM1,200 but had to pay a processing fee before claiming the money.

Unaware that she was being scammed, she began making transfers to six bank accounts from Oct 20, using money from her savings, the sale of gold jewellery and loans from friends.

> Sin Chew Daily reported that Malaysian actors Frederick Lee and Melvin Sia rekindled their friendship during a recent episode of Taiwanese travel variety show Having Fun Together.

The two entered showbiz after competing in the reality TV show Star Search in the early 2000s and were once close friends, but drifted apart after losing touch for more than a decade.

During filming, Lee broke down in tears, admitting he assumed Sia no longer wanted to be friends.

He said he had felt inferior because of his family and educational background while revealing he was hurt by not being invited to gatherings with mutual friends, prompting him to gradually withdraw from the group.

In tears, Sia explained that whenever their friends met up, he would ask why Lee was not there, saying he had invited Lee onto the show in the hope of rebuilding their friendship.
