On Sept 9, 1971, a new tabloid newspaper published its first issue in Penang. Its front-page headline read: “Jail Plot Man Says ‘Guilty’” – a straightforward court story about a prison officer admitting his involvement in a plot to help four convicts escape.
It was an unassuming beginning for a newspaper that would grow far beyond its Penang roots.
Fifty-five years later, The Star has grown alongside Malaysia, chronicling the milestones, challenges and everyday stories that have shaped our nation.
What began as a newspaper has evolved into Star Media Group (SMG), extending our reach through both media and non-media platforms – from print, digital and radio to events, community initiatives and stakeholder engagement.
Much has changed in those 55 years. How Malaysians consume information has changed. Technology has transformed how news is gathered and delivered. Audiences today expect information instantly, wherever they are and on the platforms they choose.
We have evolved with them.
But one thing must never change: the trust placed in us.
In an age where information travels faster than ever, and where fact, opinion and misinformation can easily become blurred, trust has become even more valuable. For The Star, that means continuing to uphold journalism that is credible, balanced and responsible.
Technology will continue to change. Platforms will come and go. But meaningful journalism – journalism that helps people understand issues, make informed decisions and see perspectives beyond their own – must remain at the heart of who we are.
At the same time, our role today is much broader.
The Star is Malaysia’s trusted platform for news, knowledge, conversations and communities.
We may reach Malaysians through different platforms, but they all serve one goal: to inform people, deepen understanding, bring different perspectives together and connect communities around the issues that matter.
Whether through a news report, a digital story, a radio conversation, an industry roundtable, a community initiative or an event that brings decision-makers together, the platform may be different, but our purpose remains connected.
This is why our 55th anniversary theme, “Inspiring Progress, Shaping Tomorrow”, is more than a celebration of how far we have come. It reflects the responsibility we carry into the future.
A modern media organisation should not only report what happens. It should also create space for meaningful conversations, bring different voices to the table and, where possible, turn those conversations into positive action.
Over the years, SMG has used its platforms to champion business excellence, sustainability and responsible development through initiatives such as the Star Outstanding Business Awards, ESG Positive Impact Awards and StarProperty Awards.
We have also sought to make a difference where it matters most. Through the Star Education Fund and Medical Fund, we have helped open doors to education and provided assistance to those facing difficult circumstances.
Through the Star Golden Hearts Award, Star Social Impact Grant and our support for NGOs, we celebrate and empower Malaysians who quietly make their communities better.
Increasingly, we are also bringing together communities, businesses, industry leaders and policymakers to exchange ideas and address issues that matter to Malaysia. This ability to inform, connect and convene is an important part of our contribution to nation-building.
But none of this would have been possible without our people.
As we mark 55 years, I feel an immense sense of gratitude to our Board and management for their leadership, and to generations of employees who have built and carried this institution forward.
This year, we especially honour 50 colleagues receiving our Long Service Awards – 24 who have served SMG for 15 years and 26 who have reached an extraordinary 25 years.
Their commitment reminds us that institutions are ultimately built by people – through their professionalism, resilience and belief in what we stand for.
Most importantly, I thank our readers, subscribers, advertisers, partners and shareholders. Your trust and support have sustained us for 55 years. We do not take that trust for granted.
As we look towards the next chapter, our responsibility is not simply to preserve what we have built, but to make it relevant for the generations that follow.
Across multiple platforms, we will continue to pursue one purpose: to be a trusted place for news, knowledge, conversations and communities – one that helps Malaysians understand today and participate in shaping tomorrow.
Fifty-five years ago, The Star began by telling Malaysia’s stories. Today, we remain committed to helping shape the stories to come.
