KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, is urging the public to stop racing on public roads before tragedy strikes, saying illegal street racing remains rampant and continues to endanger road users.
His Royal Highness said everyone should always remember that their families are waiting for them to return home safely and should never treat public roads as a place to test their courage.
"I am deeply saddened to see that some youths still choose public roads as a stage to seek fame, regard the roar of engines as a symbol of bravery and take pride in illegal street racing.
"More distressing is that this immoral culture is glorified on social media. Dangerous stunts are showcased to gain praise and attention, when in reality, the applause received today often ends in parents' tears, endless regret and a lonely grave," His Royal Highness said.
Al-Sultan Abdullah said this during the investiture ceremony for the state honours, awards and medals held in conjunction with His Royal Highness' 67th birthday celebration at Istana Abdulaziz here on Saturday (Aug 1).
Also in attendance were the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
Meanwhile, taking a serious view of the issue of the growing presence of foreign nationals, including Rohingya refugees, His Royal Highness ordered the authorities to take drastic action by demolishing structures, particularly those built on government land, if they are found to be illegal settlements occupied by the group.
In addition, Al-Sultan Abdullah called on the federal government to further strengthen border controls, tighten the entry process for foreign nationals, expedite the repatriation of illegal immigrants and take firm action against all parties involved.
"In my view, the most effective approach is to curb the problem at the country's entry points, particularly in our waters, before they are able to establish a foothold and set up settlements.
"Preventing the problem at the border is far more effective than dealing with it once the situation has become complicated," the Ruler said. – Bernama
