A home away from home for cancer patients

KOTA KINABALU: Cancer patients from low-income families, who struggle with accommodation costs while undergoing treatment here, can now find some relief with the opening of a second Pink Haven home.

The facility, an initiative of Sabah Kinabalu Pink Ribbon (SKPR), provides free accommodation for needy cancer patients and their caregivers while they undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other treatments.

According to Pink Haven Centre records, its first home in Taman Prima Jaya has accommodated 44 patients since 2021, while the new facility in Taman Seputeh has welcomed 14 patients since July 16 this year. Each home can accommodate up to three patients, providing a comfortable place where they can stay and prepare meals throughout their treatment.

The facilities cater to patients travelling to Kota Kinabalu from across Sabah and Labuan, including Sandakan, Tawau, Keningau, Kota Belud, Ranau and Pitas.

In his speech at the opening of Pink Haven Taman Seputeh yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor praised the initiative, saying that travelling to Kota Kinabalu for treatment could place a heavy financial burden on patients from rural communities and other parts of Sabah.

He said the journey could also be physically and emotionally exhausting, particularly for patients and caregivers who had to spend extended periods away from their homes and families while coping with the uncertainties of a cancer diagnosis.

“It is a home away from home that helps ease the burden of travelling for care. More than a building, it offers dignity, comfort and the reassurance that no one has to face this journey alone.”

His speech was delivered by state Women, Health and Community Wellbeing Assistant Minister Datuk Rina Jainal.

Hajiji said the state government recognised the importance of initiatives such as Pink Haven and of working closely with healthcare institutions, community organisations, donors and volunteers to support those affected by cancer.

He welcomed the opening of the new facility, and added that since its establishment in 2010, SKPR had played an important role in raising awareness, supporting patients and survivors, and helping communities understand the importance of standing by those affected.
