Melaka eyes tourism partnership with China’s Zhouzhuang water town

MELAKA: A proposed partnership between China's premier water town and the historic city can unlock new tourism and cultural opportunities while strengthening centuries-old ties between the two destinations, says Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

The Special Adviser on Investment and China Affairs to the Melaka Chief Minister, who also serves as the Melaka Special Envoy to China, said discussions would be held with the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) on establishing a working relationship with Kunshan Water Town Zhouzhuang Cultural Tourism Development Group Co. Ltd.

"We see tremendous potential for both destinations to exchange expertise in heritage conservation, river tourism, cultural promotion and sustainable tourism development.

"The state can also further explore the unique historical connection between Zhouzhuang and Melaka, dating back to the era of Admiral Cheng Ho's voyages, which strengthened trade and cultural exchanges between us and China," he said after a luncheon with a delegation from Kunshan Water Town at a leading hotel here on Tuesday (July 21).

Lim, who is also the Klebang assemblyman, said although Zhouzhuang was not a seaport, the ancient town played an important role in China's inland waterway transport and commercial network, supporting the Maritime Silk Road during the Ming Dynasty through its extensive canal system linking major trading centres.

He said both Zhouzhuang and Melaka share a rich history shaped by waterways, making them natural partners in preserving cultural heritage while developing high-value tourism products.

"Melaka is internationally recognised for its multicultural heritage and maritime history, while Zhouzhuang is renowned for preserving China's traditional water-town civilisation.

"We can create meaningful cultural exchanges and attract more international visitors," he said.

Located in Kunshan, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Zhouzhuang is widely recognised as one of the best-preserved ancient water towns.

Established more than 900 years ago during the Song Dynasty, the town is famed for its network of canals, stone bridges and centuries-old Ming and Qing dynasty architecture.

It was among China's first National 5A Tourist Attractions, the country's highest tourism rating.

Surrounded by waterways that weave through its historic streets, Zhouzhuang has become one of China's most iconic cultural tourism destinations, drawing millions of visitors annually to experience its traditional riverside lifestyle, heritage architecture and distinctive culture.
