MELAKA: The 24-year-old p-hailing rider who was killed after crashing into a tree in Semabok is not linked to an illegal race that occurred here, say police.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Halim Abas said the accident had no connection to an illegal motorcycle race on Sunday morning (Sept 6).
He said police received a report on the crash at about 2.30am (Sept 6) and preliminary investigations found that the victim, Muhammad Hakimin A. Samah, was travelling from Kandang towards the city centre.
"The victim skidded and crashed into a tree and was pronounced dead at the scene," he said.
ACP Halim said there were no witnesses or dashcam footage of the crash.
He said investigations were underway under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
On the illegal race, ACP Halim said an operation was mounted after police received a complaint at 3.10am on Sunday about a group of motorcyclists riding recklessly on the Alor Gajah-Jasin-Melaka Tengah highway.
He said patrols were mobilised to conduct surveillance and enforcement.
"Two individuals were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 on suspicion of reckless and dangerous riding.
"Eight motorcycles were also impounded during the operation conducted at several locations along AMJ," he said.
ACP Halim said police issued a total of 97 summonses for various traffic offences during the operation.
