Melaka records 107 sexual crime cases from January to May 2026, assembly told


MELAKA: A total of 107 sexual crime cases were recorded in Melaka between January and May 2026, with rape accounting for the highest number, with 31 cases, the Melaka Legislative Assembly was told.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the figure comprised seven categories of sexual offences, including offences under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (SOACA 2017).

Based on the crime index statistics, 31 rape cases were recorded during the first five months of this year, compared with 54 cases during the same corresponding period last year

"The cases comprised rape, including incest, gang rape and attempted rape (31), outrage of modesty (18), offences under SOACA 2017 (44), eight cases of sexual harassment (eight), sodomy (three), stalking (two) and one case involving the possession of obscene material.

"In 2025, Melaka recorded a total of 247 sexual crime cases, comprising 110 offences under SOACA 2017, 54 rape cases, 47 cases of outrage of modesty, 25 cases of sexual harassment, six cases of sodomy, four cases of stalking and one case involving the possession of obscene material," he said.

He said this in reply to an oral question from Bemban assemblyman Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub during the assembly proceedings on Tuesday (July 14).

The statistics were presented in response to a question on the trend of crime, including sexual offences, reported in the state for this year.
