JOHOR BARU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued notices to a group of election campaign workers seen riding motorcycles without wearing helmets during the recent Johor state election campaign.
Johor JPJ director Zulkarnain Yasin said the department viewed the viral incident seriously and had taken enforcement action against those involved.
He said the individuals had been served with a Notice 114, requiring them to attend any JPJ office within 30 days from the date the notice was issued for investigations.
“Failure to do so will result in action being taken for failing to comply with the notice, which carries a maximum compound of RM300. Upon conviction in court, offenders may be fined up to RM2,000, jailed for up to six months, or both,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 14).
Zulkarnain added that if the individuals attended the investigation and there was no doubt that an offence had been committed, they would be issued a summons for riding without wearing a safety helmet.
On July 11, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said action would be taken regardless of political affiliation, including against Pakatan Harapan campaign workers.
“The law must be enforced fairly and equally on all Malaysians. I will not compromise on this principle, even if it involves my own campaign colleagues,” said Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general.
