KULAI: The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) recorded 5,944 online scam reports as of April 2026, says Teo Nie Ching.
The Deputy Communications Minister said that of the total, 2,566 involved e-commerce fraud and 1,369 telecommunication scams, while the remainder comprised non-existent loan and investment schemes.
"According to data provided by the NSRC, it received 5,944 reports via its 997 hotline for the first four months of 2026. So, it looks like many people already know that there is a 997 hotline to assist our scam victims.
"But I feel that, at the same time, this also shows that there are many more scam victims among us. So, awareness and digital literacy are extremely important," she told reporters after the Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival at Hutan Bandar Putra here on Friday (Aug 28).
Meanwhile, Teo said the campaign would be expanded to nine other districts in Johor, after Kulai became the first district in the state to host it.
Teo, who is also the Kulai MP, said that after Kulai, the programme would be held in Kluang, Muar, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Segamat, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Tangkak and Johor Bahru, culminating on Dec 19.
According to her, the Safe Internet Campaign, launched in 2025, originally focused on educational institutions, including primary and secondary schools, public and private higher education institutions and the Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM).
"However, this year we want to adopt a different approach by involving the community because knowledge regarding safe internet use is not only needed by students, but the entire community, including parents and senior citizens," she said. – Bernama
