KUALA LUMPUR: Umno does not have any political agreement with PAS ahead of the Negri Sembilan state election, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president was referring to reports of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang claiming there were ongoing seat negotiations for Negri Sembilan between the two parties to ensure the state would be led by a Malay-Muslim government.
"What he (Abdul Hadi) said should not all be accepted as an fact because we do not have any agreement with PAS.
"Any discussions were only to form mutual understanding. We did not finalise any decision but we will follow up on developments," said Zahid during the Majlis Amanat of World Skills Shanghai 2026 at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (July 13).
"We should have goodwill, yes – but not be overly positive. They can change the goalposts at any time," he said, adding that PAS had done this before.
When asked about Umno's strategy for the Negri Sembilan polls, Ahmad Zahid said it would be based on state's political situation.
"This is not just about candidates. The situation in Negri Sembilan is of course different because the number of seats, the state's demographics and voting patterns are different. Therefore, the formula must be adjusted", said Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that the unity government was moving "as one team." "Public perception is one thing – but the reality is that we are in a very good zone," he said.
On Nga Kor Ming saying he would resign if Barisan won the Johor polls and Najib was freed, Ahmad Zahid this was "not advisable."
"He is someone I meet every week at Cabinet meetings. He is my friend.
"He doesn't need to do all that. However, in the government context, maybe that statement can be considered reasonable," he said.
