BUKIT GAMBIR: Reject racial politics and make wise choices at the ballot box because the future of the country depends on leaders who uphold unity, integrity and justice, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at a youth programme in support of Pakatan Harapan candidate for Gambir Mohd Nor Mohd Yusof on the eve of polling day, the Prime Minister said Malaysians should not allow themselves to be divided along racial lines.
Recalling his childhood growing up in a multiracial neighbourhood, he said Malays, Chinese and Indians lived harmoniously despite their differences.
"I grew up with Malay, Chinese and Indian friends. We did not see each other through the lens of race," he said on Friday (July 10).
Anwar said divisive narratives contradicted the teachings of Islam, citing the story of Bilal ibn Rabah, one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad, who was once a slave of Ethiopian descent.
He said the Prophet strongly condemned discrimination based on race or skin colour, stressing that Islam teaches equality and respect for all.
Addressing the youths, Anwar encouraged them to pursue excellence in education and embrace emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and digital technology, while remaining rooted in strong moral values.
"We must reach for the skies, but keep our feet firmly on the ground," he said, urging young people to also cherish their parents and show affection.
Before ending his speech, Anwar reminded those eligible to vote to exercise their democratic right responsibly.
Campaigning for the Johor state election officially ends at midnight on Friday, with voters set to cast their ballots on Saturday for all 56 state seats.
