Cops nab suspected stalker of varsity student in viral video

SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested a man suspected of repeatedly stalking a 22-year-old university student after CCTV footage showing him allegedly sniffing her shoes outside the grille door of her apartment went viral on social media.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Sarudin Samah said the arrest followed a police report lodged by the woman at 3.55pm on Sunday (July 12) after a post on Threads by the account "aynndyh._" drew widespread attention.

"The viral CCTV footage allegedly showed a man taking a pair of shoes from inside the victim's apartment and sniffing them at an apartment in Seksyen 7 here," he said in a statement on Monday (July 13).

ACP Sarudin said the victim claimed she had been repeatedly harassed and followed by the same man since April this year, both at her university and around her residential area.

Acting on information, police from the Shah Alam district criminal investigation division arrested the suspect at about 8.30pm on Sunday in Seksyen 7.

"The suspect, who is in his 20s, is also a university student. Initial checks found that he has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs," he said.

He added that police would apply for a remand order against the suspect at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The case is being investigated under Section 507A of the Penal Code for repeated stalking, an offence punishable by up to three years' imprisonment or a fine upon conviction.

Those with information on the case are urged to contact investigating officer Insp Sabryna Taha at 014-5130450 to assist in the investigation.
