Johor polls: MCA's performance shows years of hard work pay off, says Dr Wee

JOHOR BARU: MCA's impressive performance in the Johor state election, doubling its representation from four to eight seats, shows that consistent grassroots service eventually wins over voters, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

"MCA has increased its representation from four seats to eight. The results prove that if we continue serving the people with sincerity and perseverance, voters will continue to support us," the MCA president told reporters on Saturday (July 11).

He thanked voters for giving strong backing to Barisan Nasional and MCA's candidates, describing the outcome as encouragement for the party to continue strengthening its grassroots work.

He said MCA's gains were not limited to winning more seats but were also reflected in the increased majorities secured by its incumbent assemblymen.

According to unofficial results, MCA retained Yong Peng, Paloh, Bekok and Pekan Nanas, while also capturing Tangkak, Jementah, Johor Jaya and Layang-Layang.

Dr Wee said the victories in constituencies that the party previously lost by narrow margins demonstrated that years of groundwork had paid off.

He noted that MCA failed to win any seats in the 2018 Johor polls before recovering to win four seats in 2022. This latest result, he said, marked another significant step forward for the party.

"The increase gives us renewed confidence. It is also recognition of the hard work put in by our candidates, grassroots machinery and elected representatives over the years," he said.

Dr Wee said he had instructed all MCA assemblymen, both new and returning, to repay voters' trust by working even harder for their constituents.

"We must continue serving the people with humility and dedication. We will not neglect any constituency or any voter who has supported us," he said.

He added that the party would continue working in constituencies where it lost, particularly those decided by narrow margins.

Dr Wee also credited Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's leadership for Barisan Nasional's convincing victory, saying the coalition had successfully addressed issues raised during the campaign and earned voters' confidence.

He said MCA would continue giving its full support to Onn Hafiz and the Barisan-led state government to ensure Johor's development agenda could continue for the benefit of the people.
