PUTRAJAYA: Cross border connectivity, development of a special economic zone and enhancing flood mitigation measures in the Golok basin are among the various areas agreed on for enhanced collaboration between Thailand and Malaysia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said both Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and himself will jointly undertake a visit to officiate the opening of a road linking Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Malaysia and the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Sadao, Thailand on Friday (July 10).
“Not many of such visits head to remote areas of the border. This reflects his (Anutin’s) personal commitment to enhance these relations.
“We also agreed to proceed with the special border economic zone to facilitate exchanges in immigrations and customs between the two countries,” Anwar said at a joint press conference with Anutin here on Thursday (July 9).
On this, Anutin said both checkpoints make up the largest and most strategic land border crossing between both countries.
“We also discussed plans to promote seamless multimodal connectivity on both Western and Eastern corridors of the peninsula as part of our broader vision for deeper regional integration and long-term economic resilience,” said the Thai Prime Minister.
He also said that both countries also agreed to enhance collaboration between the relevant water authorities across both countries to improve water level monitoring and strengthen flood prevention in the Golok basin.
On another matter, Anwar said that the Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok second bridge was also discussed, noting that the proposal is currently ongoing and would be beneficial for both south Thailand and Kelantan.
Anutin is currently on a two-day official visit to Malaysia.
