Teen couple’s deaths spark violence in community

VIOLENCE broke out in a village in India’s Tamil Nadu after the deaths of a teenage couple sparked allegations of caste discrimination, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Parthiban, 19, and Divyadarshini, 17, were in love but the girl’s family objected to the relationship after discovering they were from different communities.

A few days earlier, the girl’s family and relatives allegedly attacked the boy, prompting his family to lodge a police report.

When the boy went missing the next day, police quickly traced his handphone to a hut in a field on the outskirts of the village only to find the young couple dead.

Initial investigation ruled out foul play.

When news of their deaths broke, the boy’s relatives and villagers accused the girl’s family of carrying out an “honour killing” and vandalised the family’s home and those of some relatives allegedly involved in the earlier assault.

Around 200 police personnel were deployed to the village to prevent further violence.
