S. Korean duo held over US$39mil fake cheque

TWO South Korean men were arrested after they attempted to deposit a fake cheque amounting to US$39mil (RM158mil) at a bank in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district.

China Press reported that the duo, aged 52 and 63, presented the cheque at the bank at 10.50am on Thursday and asked for a money transfer to a corporate account.

But after verification, bank staff members found something amiss – the payee’s name on the cheque did not match the company’s name provided – and contacted the police.

They also told the police that the print on the cheque was blurry, raising suspicion that it was fake.

The duo, who had recently arrived in the city, were detained to assist in investigations.

Last year, authorities reported a total of 53 cases related to fake or bounced cheques, resulting in about HK$560mil (RM290mil) in losses.

> Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported that California had designated May 17 as Bruce Lee Day to commemorate the late martial artiste and filmmaker.

California Governor Gavin Newsom had last month signed a Bill for Bruce Lee Day, making Lee the first Chinese American to have a day established in his honour in the state.

State assembly member Matt Haney, who introduced the Bill in February, said Lee had transformed martial arts, redefined Hollywood and inspired millions around the world to pursue their potential.

“Bruce Lee represents the very best of California – innovation, diversity, determination and the courage to challenge convention,” he said.

Lee was born in San Francisco on Nov 27, 1940, and grew up in Hong Kong where he learned martial arts before returning to the United States in 1959.

His career was cut short by his sudden death at the age of 32.
