Put up posters properly or be fined, says mayor

JOHOR BARU: Avoid placing campaign posters and materials that could obstruct traffic or endanger public safety, says Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad (pic).

This was the advice of the Johor Baru mayor to candidates and political parties contesting in the state election, urging them to comply with the local council’s regulations during the campaign period.

“Political banners and buntings cannot be placed indiscriminately.

“They must be installed only at approved locations and in accordance with the council’s guidelines,” he told reporters after the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) board meeting yesterday.

Mohd Haffiz warned that those who erect banners without approval or display them at prohibited locations could face a compound of RM200 per day.

This is separate from a RM2,000 compound for offences involving the obstruction of public roads or the display of banners on public buildings, he added.

Meanwhile, Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the campaigning period for the Johor state election would end at 11.59pm on July 10, with polling set for July 11.

“Campaign materials containing content that incites hatred, promotes racial sentiments, touches on religious sensitivities or creates hostility are strictly prohibited,” he added.

Ramlan stressed that campaign materials such as advertisements, flyers and posters must also display the names and addresses of both the printer and publisher.
