PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across six states and the Federal Territory of Labuan, effective until 5pm on Monday (June 22).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Pulau Pinang, alongside Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baru in Kedah.
On the east coast, severe weather is expected across most of Terengganu, including Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.
Further south, the warning encompasses several districts in Johor, namely Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru.
Over in East Malaysia, the alert spans multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Kuching, Serian (Tebedu), Samarahan (Samarahan and Asajaya), Sri Aman, Betong (Betong), Sibu (Selangau), Mukah (Daro, Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song), Bintulu (Tatau), Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri and Marudi) and Limbang.
For Sabah, affected areas include Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Nabawan), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud) and Sandakan (Telupid), alongside the entire Federal Territory of Labuan.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 2.30pm on Monday.
