PETALING JAYA: Refrain from littering at both the National Day celebrations in Putrajaya and Festival Ambang Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur or risk facing action under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), says the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
The ministry said Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation enforcement officers will be stationed at identified hotspots throughout the festivities.
“The quantity of waste produced, including food and drink containers, plastic bottles, food wrappers and other disposable items, is expected to increase owing to the large crowds.
“All those present must dispose of their rubbish in designated areas before leaving the venue.
“Enforcement action will be taken against those found littering," the ministry said in a statement on Friday (Aug 28).
The ministry added that those found guilty of littering can be fined up to RM2,000.
The court can also order those convicted to perform community service for a maximum of 12-hours, which must be completed within a six-month period.
Community service here can include collecting rubbish or cleaning public areas.
In the same statement, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said National Day celebrations should not just be about patriotism but also exemplifying discipline and collective responsibility in ensuring the country’s cleanliness.
“We want Malaysians to come out and celebrate National Day with pride. At the same time, do not leave any rubbish behind.
“Our love for the country should not only be about waving the Jalur Gemilang but also keeping our country clean and uplifting the country’s image,” he said.
“We want both Dataran Merdeka and Putrajaya to remain clean after the celebrations. Malaysia is our home and this is our collective responsibility," he added.
