No update on two officers missing in Nepal flash floods, says Fire and Rescue DG

PETALING JAYA: There have been no further updates on the two Fire and Rescue Department officers who remain uncontactable following the flash floods in Rasuwa, Nepal.

"As of now, we have not received any latest information. We have been keeping tabs by communicating with the family," Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said when contacted by The Star on Friday (Aug 28).

The two officers are professional climber Mohd Fakhrul Munir Mohd Isa, who is also a member of the department's special forces team, and senior Fire and Rescue Department officer Mohd Sani Harul.

They were part of a group of 10 Malaysians travelling towards Everest Base Camp after departing for Nepal on Monday (Aug 24) night.

Earlier, Nor Hisham reportedly said that the department is ready to deploy its Special Tactical Operations and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) to Nepal at any time, including at short notice, should it receive instructions from the Federal Government.

However, he said the deployment would be subject to a request from the Nepalese Government, as well as instructions and co-ordination by the Foreign Ministry through Wisma Putra and Nadma.

"We have prepared our best team, particularly STORM personnel, who possess the necessary skills and have completed the preliminary documentation to enable them to be deployed as quickly as possible.

"If we receive instructions, even at short notice, we are ready to move," he told reporters when met at the 2026 National Day parade rehearsal programme here on Friday.
