IPOH: Anjung Singgah Perak has been designated as a centralised food distribution centre for the homeless in Ipoh, with the National Welfare Foundation as the project’s coordinator.
The foundation’s chief executive officer, Nordina Haron, said that the Perak state government, in collaboration with government agencies, NGOs and strategic partners, support the decision.
She said that previously, food distribution efforts were uncoordinated and were carried out by various parties at different locations across the city.
“I thank the State Women, Family, Community Welfare committee chairman, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, for her support of the initiative.
“The decision was reached during a coordination meeting on the implementation of the homeless transit centre in Ipoh, which also involved Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah and representatives from various agencies and NGOs,” she said in a statement issued on Monday (June 15).
“The new arrangement supports efforts to collect data on the needs of the homeless, to improve long-term social intervention programmes.
“The programme also offers counselling services, health screenings, free haircuts, shoe repair services and referrals for welfare assistance through the Social Support Centre under the foundation,” said Nordina.
The food distribution centre operates daily from 8pm to 11pm in front of the Anjung Singgah Perak premises.
The foundation has also called on more stakeholders, including NGOs, corporations and individuals, to participate through sponsorships, donations, volunteer work and other forms of support.
