KUALA LUMPUR: Unfazed by the possibility of several states calling for elections, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said his focus remains on governance and delivering for the people.
He said the decision to dissolve the legislative assembly rests with the respective state government.
Asked if this latest political development had worried and distracted him, Anwar replied: “Why? do I look worried? I am just focusing on my job.
“The problem is some people do not think about these things. They should be focusing on their job,” he told reporters at the Energy Transition Conference 2026.
On whether it was unnecessary to call for election in Johor, the Prime Minister said: “It is their decision.
“We have our own priorities. We focus on our work,” he said.
The Johor Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1, paving the way for the 16th state polls.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the dissolution of the state assembly after receiving the consent of the Johor Regent.
The state election must be held within 60 days from the effective date of the dissolution.
In the 15th state election on March 12, 2022, Barisan Nasional won 40 seats, Pakatan Harapan took 12 seats, Perikatan Nasional (three) and Muda won one.
Meanwhile, talk of snap polls in Negri Sembilan has gained traction after Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun had two separate audience with the state Ruler on Wednesday.
Political analysts are also expecting Melaka to follow suit.
In May, Anwar said he would consider calling a snap general election if tensions within the ruling coalition worsened.
The next general election is due next year.
