Task force to probe LRT derailment, says Transport Minister

PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry has set up a special task force to investigate the cause of the LRT train derailment near the Chan Sow Lin station on Thursday (May 28).

In a statement Thursday, the ministry said it viewed the incident as a very serious matter as it was not merely a routine service disruption.

“A train derailment carries significant safety risks to passengers and staff,” Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in the statement.

He said although all 25 passengers were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, the ministry is taking a firm stance and will not compromise on public safety.

He added that he had directed the task force’s findings be submitted to Cabinet as soon as possible and for the report to be made public.

“I have also instructed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to take the maximum punitive action against Prasarana Malaysia Bhd in relation to this incident,” he said.

Loke said APAD had also opened an investigation paper into the incident with immediate effect.

“Incidents of this nature must be treated seriously, and no one in Prasarana’s top management will be exempt from accountability in this matter,” he said.

He added that safety standards and the reliability of public services are not things that can be compromised.

Loke said serious action, including dismissal, must be taken by Prasarana against any party found negligent in carrying out their responsibilities.

This is necessary to restore public confidence in the reliability of rail services operated by Prasarana, he added.
