PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) decision to lift its suspension on online vehicle ownership transfer services has brought relief to many vehicle owners and used car dealers.
When The Star visited a JPJ branch yesterday, a steady stream of people were seen queuing to perform various services, including vehicle ownership transfers, following the temporary suspension of the online system.
At the branch, a company runner said the situation was busier than usual, with JPJ opening a dedicated counter for individual vehicle ownership transfer transactions.
“I frequently come here to transfer the ownership of my company’s vehicles, so I prefer to do it over the counter because there are often several vehicles to settle at one time.
“But for individuals, it is better to do the transfer online whenever possible, as it saves them from queuing at JPJ offices,” he said.
On Sunday, JPJ announced that its online vehicle ownership transfer service would be suspended effective yesterday.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the move followed complaints involving cases of ownership being transferred without the knowledge of the registered vehicle owners.
However, the suspension was short-lived, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke announcing yesterday that JPJ would restore its online vehicle ownership transfer service following concerns over temporary disruptions caused by system improvement works.
Loke said he had discussed the matter with JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli after reports emerged about the suspension of online ownership transfers.
Meanwhile, Carsome group chief business officer Aaron Kee said the company welcomed the swift reinstatement of the service, which helps ensure continuity for consumers, dealers and industry players.
“We process thousands of online ownership transfers a month through our branches nationwide.
“The suspension would have meant that the transfers needed to be done at JPJ counters.
“This would affect transaction flow and processing time, disrupt the customer experience, and prolong vehicle delivery timelines.”
Kee said Carsome recognises and remains supportive of JPJ and the Transport Ministry’s efforts to strengthen the integrity of the online ownership transfer process.
