PORT DICKSON: The formation of the Federal Government involving Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan was driven by circumstances and does not bind the two coalitions politically, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic).
The Umno vice-president said the unity government was formed following the 15th General Election after no single coalition secured enough seats to govern on its own.
“It was an agreement to form the Federal Government. We all know what happened then, which compelled us to work together.
“We agreed to form the government and serve the country,” he told reporters after attending a programme with army personnel here yesterday.
Mohamed Khaled said the people would once again decide which party they wanted to govern at the next election.
His remarks come amid claims by certain quarters that Barisan was being ungrateful to Pakatan.
The criticism comes as Barisan and Pakatan, despite being partners in the Federal Government, are facing off against each other in the Negri Sembilan state election on Aug 1.
Following the results of the 15th General Election on Nov 19, 2022, no coalition secured a simple majority to form the government.
This led to the formation of the unity government comprising Pakatan, Barisan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and several other parties, with Perikatan Nasional becoming the main opposition coalition.
