Teen’s body found in Dungun drowning, brother still missing

DUNGUN: The body of a 15-year-old boy, believed to have drowned while swimming with his brother in Sungai Beril near Taman Beril, Paka, was found on Sunday (May 24) afternoon.

Acting Dungun OCPD Deputy Supt Jumaidy Bah Chong Weh said the body of Muhammad Amir Ashraf was found by a search and rescue (SAR) team at 3.47 pm after the brothers got swept away by currents just before 10.56am on Sunday.

He said divers from the Chukai Fire and Rescue Department's Water Rescue Team found the body of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Durian Guling student on the riverbed at a depth of about 5.1m.

"The body was located some 7m from where the victim was last seen. The body has been sent to the Dungun Hospital forensic unit for a post-mortem," he said when contacted.

Jumaidy said the search continues for the victim's 14-year-old brother, Muhammad Aidil Amsyar Mohd Zul-Zunaidi, who remains missing.

A 37-member search-and-rescue team, comprising Fire and Rescue Department personnel, police, and local villagers, was deployed after an emergency call was received at 10.56am.

The two brothers were swimming with two friends, Muhammad Farish Iqbal Cik Mohanarunasdi, 14, and Muhammad Afi Naashif Adli Noone, 15, who managed to swim to safety. - Bernama
