"The Office of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker has just received official notification from the Office of the Perikatan Chief Whip this morning regarding the appointment of the Kemaman MP as the new Opposition chief," it said in a brief statement.

Perikatan's supreme council decided on Saturday (May 16) to name Ahmad Samsuri, the coalition chairman, as Opposition Leader.

The Terengganu Mentri Besar replaces Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who was stripped of the position after he was expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13.

The issue of who would be the new Opposition Leader arose after Hamzah's sacking.

The Dewan Rakyat will convene again next month.
