MIC's entry into Perikatan now void after no confirmation, says Takiyuddin

SHAH ALAM: The earlier decision to accept MIC as a member party of Perikatan Nasional is no longer relevant and has been revoked following the party's failure to confirm it is joining the coalition.

Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the matter was decided at the coalition's supreme council meeting held on Saturday (May 16).

"Until now, MIC has not given a final decision on its entry as a Perikatan member party, which was decided on Dec 9, 2025, although it has been asked to do so several times.

"Following the lack of confirmation, and MIC's official statement that it never made a formal application to join Perikatan, it has been decided that the earlier decision to accept MIC as a member party is unfortunately no longer relevant and is void," he said in a statement on Sunday.

In March, Sinar Harian reported that MIC had yet to finalise any decision on whether to join Perikatan.

In the same development, Takiyuddin said the coalition was ready for the next general election, backed by its internal structure and existing support, including experience in and out of government before and after the 15th General Election.

He said Perikatan was also open to exploring an electoral pact with any party or group that shared the same principles and vision, and was interested in becoming Perikatan's strategic partner without becoming a component party.

As such, he said a special committee comprising representatives from the parties in Perikatan would be set up to detail the terms and conditions of the political cooperation.

"This approach is believed to be more suited to the reality of the country's political landscape, while upholding the importance of constructive political cooperation for national stability and the well-being of the people, who are now under greater pressure without a convincing way out.

"It is also seen as opening space for all parties to be actively involved in the country's political process in a more meaningful and healthy way through an official, mature and orderly national political cooperation," he added.
