KUALA LUMPUR: Mountaineer Mohd Khafiz Bachok etched his name in history as one of the few Malaysians to have conquered Mount Everest, achieving the feat at 2.25am Nepal time on Monday (May 18).
According to a Facebook post by expedition organiser AltiPro Adventures, Mohd Khafiz scaled the world's tallest mountain, standing at 8,848.86m, together with Mongolian climber Munkhuu Myagmar and Sherpa guides Mingma Dorchi Sherpa (Saila) and Karma Gyalje Sherpa.
Another summit group comprising Australian climber Jennifer Claire Willis, as well as Nepalese Phunjo Jangmu Lama, Mingma Nurbu Sherpa and Pastenji Sherpa reached the summit 10 minutes later.
Mohd Khafiz had previously summited the world's second-highest peak, K2 (8,611m) in Pakistan, as well as the world's eighth-highest mountain, Manaslu (8,163m) in Nepal.
Altipro Adventures described the achievement as a historic milestone for the company as it marked the success of its very first Everest expedition season.
"With immense pride and gratitude, Altipro Adventures celebrates a historic milestone. This achievement marks the beginning of our journey in high-altitude expedition leadership, built on commitment, teamwork, safety and relentless determination.
"In one of the world's most demanding mountaineering environments, our climbers and Sherpa team demonstrated extraordinary resilience, strength and expedition spirit, successfully reaching the Roof of the World via a safe and strategic summit push," the post read.
Altipro Adventures said the successful ascent reflected the strong teamwork, discipline and perseverance displayed by climbers and guides throughout the expedition in the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The company also expressed appreciation to its Sherpa team for their expertise and commitment in ensuring the safety and success of the expedition.
Altipro Adventures added that all climbers are now focused on making a safe descent back to Everest Base Camp following the summit push. - Bernama
