How Sunway College’s new applied AI Diploma prepares students for the tech economy

Sunway College advances its technology curriculum with the launch of the Diploma in Applied Artificial Intelligence and a strategic partnership with Open Technology Incubator.

AS artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms the global economy, the demand for skilled AI professionals continues to grow. With AI tools used by over one billion people worldwide, organisations across industries are actively seeking talent capable of turning AI technologies into real-world innovation and measurable impact.

To meet this growing demand, Sunway College has launched its Diploma in Applied Artificial Intelligence – a future-focused programme designed to provide technical expertise and practical experience for the fast-evolving AI economy.

What is Sunway College’s Diploma in Applied AI?

The programme combines core AI knowledge with hands-on application, preparing students to solve real-world challenges.

"Technology continues to advance, and AI is now becoming an integral part of everyday life, making it essential that we embrace it while teaching students to use it ethically and responsibly. By doing so, we can equip them with the skills and mindset to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven world," says Prof Teo Ee Sing, Sunway College managing director.

Key focus areas and practical learning:

> Core AI subjects:  machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing (NLP), cloud-based AI and intelligent systems.

> Real-world applications: Hands-on development of chatbots, predictive tools and automated workflows.

> Ethical AI governance: AI systems for accuracy, fairness and responsible deployment.

> Capstone project: Design and deploy a complete AI solution from data preparation to execution.

The learning experience extends beyond the classroom through internship opportunities at the Research Centre for Human-Machine Collaboration (HUMAC) at Sunway University. Students gain exposure to real-world AI applications, including 3D mapping and AI-powered detection systems used to assess the ripeness and harvest readiness of palm oil fruits.

The diploma also serves as the first step in a comprehensive AI education pathway, enabling students to progress to the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence, followed by the Master in Artificial Intelligence at Sunway University.

Bridging academia and industry

Reinforcing its commitment to producing industry-ready graduates, Sunway College also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Open Technology Incubator, an organisation dedicated to nurturing companies that develop open source technologies, products and services.

"Sunway College and Sunway University are among the best private institutions in Asean, with a strong commitment to ethics and sustainability. These are values we deeply believe in, making this collaboration a natural fit. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and strategic mindset to stand out and build successful careers in the AI era," shares Prof Dave Harris, advisor to the Open Technology Venture Fund.

The partnership will strengthen collaboration between academia and industry by creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, industry engagement and innovation in emerging technologies. Students will also gain greater exposure to the open source ecosystem, developing an understanding of modern software development practices and the commercialisation of AI-driven technologies.

More than preparing students for jobs, Sunway College is cultivating innovators who will shape the future of industries and communities alike.
