Contractor swindled out of RM130,000 in fake National Archives tender scam

IPOH: A 55-year-old contractor lost about RM130,000 after falling victim to a phone scam in Manjung.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the victim received a call from an individual who identified himself as an officer from the Perak National Archives Department, offering him a building maintenance tender for electrical works.

ACP Hasbullah said the victim was instructed to buy a few pieces of equipment from a "supplier" before starting work.

"The victim made two online banking transactions, amounting to about RM129,594, into different accounts as given by the suspect.

"The victim only realised he had been cheated after being informed that the equipment had been purportedly received, but there had been no meet-ups or valid documentation," he said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 13).

"When he contacted the National Archives, they denied having contacted him for the tender," he said, adding that a police report was lodged on Thursday.

ACP Hasbullah said the matter will be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"We are trying to identify the respective bank account holders, as well as other suspects involved.

"The public are urged to always take precautions and not be easily deceived by tender or project offers via WhatsApp, social media or any unauthorised platforms," he said.

"Any offers received should be checked and verified by the respective agencies through official channels before making any payment or transactions.

"Any information or advice related to scams can be obtained at the district police station at 05-689 9222 or the National Scam Response Centre at 997," he added.
