KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 20,000 cases of domestic violence were recorded between 2024 to August this year, says the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.
It said 7,116 cases were recorded in 2024, followed by 7,391 cases in 2025 and 5,278 up to August this year, according to police statistics.
The ministry also said the police recorded 42 cases of repeat victims in 2024, 154 in 2025 and 44 up to August this year.
The ministry said the Welfare Department provides various protection and support systems to victims of domestic violence, which includes the issuing of an Emergency Protection Order within a two-hour period for cases that require immediate protection.
“The department also aids victims in getting an Interim Protection Order and Protection Order from the courts alongside providing temporary shelter,” it said in a written parliamentary reply on Wednesday (Oct 14).
The ministry said the Welfare Department also monitors and records each intervention measure taken for each case.
It also said interventions, including individual and family counselling, are among the measures taken.
“Each measure is unique to the needs of each victim to ensure comprehensive and effective security, recovery and support are provided.
“Each complaint is recorded and immediately referred to the relevant agencies, where applicable,” the ministry said.
The ministry was responding to Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat) who asked about the number of victims of domestic violence in 2024, 2025 and 2026 as well as the number of repeat victims.
He also asked about the average time frame to obtain protection alongside the effectiveness of the Welfare Department’s intervention measures once a report is made.
