Disabled teen killed in house fire

KOTA KINABALU: A disabled teenager was killed in a fire and his elder brother suffered burns while attempting a rescue.

In the 3am fire yesterday, Lorex Sindam,16, is believed to have been trapped in the burning house at Kampung Torintidon, Jalan Kampung Lampada in Kota Marudu.

His 28-year-old brother, Razani, rushed into the burning house but had to get out as the flames were too strong, resulting in him suffering burns on his body.

Villagers put out the fire and rushed Razani to hospital.

Kota Marudu fire station chief Debli Mamoi said when they received a distress call, a team of eight firemen rushed to the scene about 22km away.

However, the firetruck could only go 14km into the area and firefighters had to switch to four-wheel-drive vehicles as the asphalt road had ended.

“When our team arrived at 4.48am, the wooden house was already destroyed,” Debli said when contacted.

He said the charred remains of the victim was found inside the burnt structure when firefighters were carrying out overhaul duties using villagers’ water pipes.
