KUCHING: Sarawak's state-owned airline AirBorneo plans to set up routes to Kota Kinabalu and Jakarta in 2027 as its fleet expands.
Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said more aircraft would be progressively added to AirBorneo's fleet through 2027.
"We are targeting to commence services to Kota Kinabalu and Jakarta early 2027, subject to necessary regulatory approvals and operational readiness," he said after inspecting AirBorneo's operational readiness at Kuching International Airport here on Friday (July 17).
He added the planned fleet expansion would enable AirBorneo to introduce more domestic and international destinations, increase flight frequencies and provide travellers greater convenience and more travel choices.
AirBorneo will commence its Kuching-Kuala Lumpur service on July 20, followed by the Kuching-Singapore route on July 22.
"The launch of both the Kuala Lumpur and Singapore services within such a short period demonstrates AirBorneo's operational readiness and its commitment to progressively expand its network.
"It also reflects Sarawak's growing position as an aviation gateway in the region," Lee said.
During the visit, he toured AirBorneo's newly-arrived Boeing 737-800 aircraft and was briefed on the airline's operational preparations.
AirBorneo conducted full-scale wet run exercises on Thursday (July 16) and Friday (July 17) using two aircraft under simulated commercial operating conditions.
The exercises involved passengers and a full cabin crew on board, with participants invited to provide feedback to refine services and ensure operational readiness.
AirBorneo also opened its first ticket office at Kuching International Airport on Friday (July 17).
