KOTA KINABALU: The United States’ easing of its travel advisory for Sabah reflects growing international confidence in the state’s security and stability, says Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
The state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said the development was timely as Sabah prepares for Visit Sabah 2027.
Jafry welcomed the statement by US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur Charge d’Affaires David Gamble that the United States had relaxed its travel advisory since March.
“It also sends a clear message to the world that Sabah is a safe and stable destination, ready to welcome more international visitors,” he said yesterday.
He said the United States placed most parts of Sabah under Level 1 in February, advising travellers to exercise normal precautions.
However, the islands and maritime areas off Sabah’s east coast remain under Level 2, which advises travellers to exercise increased caution.
Japan also lowered its travel advisory for Sabah in June, reducing the alert for coastal areas of Eastern Sabah, from Kudat to Tawau, from Level 2 to Level 1.
It also lowered its advisory for several islands in Eastern Sabah from Level 3, which advises against all travel, to Level 2.
Jafry said the decisions reflected the effectiveness of continuous efforts by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom), police, the armed forces, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and other agencies to safeguard the state.
“We extend our deepest appreciation to all security personnel for their continued dedication to protecting Sabah’s people, visitors and tourism areas.
“These security efforts must continue, as travellers’ confidence is fundamental to the growth of Sabah’s tourism industry.”
Jafry hoped the positive developments would encourage more countries to reassess their travel advisories.
He said the easing of travel advisories could boost tourist arrivals, strengthen confidence among airlines and investors, and directly benefit tourism operators and local communities.
“As we move towards Visit Sabah 2027, this growing international confidence will further strengthen our efforts to position Sabah as a preferred, safe and responsible tourism destination in the region,” he added.
