Special tribunal to handle appeals on social media posts

JOHOR BARU: Individuals whose social media accounts are blocked or whose content is removed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can file an appeal through a special tribunal, says Teo Nie Ching.

The Deputy Communications Minister said disputes involving actions taken by MCMC online could be brought before the Communications, Multimedia and Online Safety Appeal Tribunal for review.

“This is an ad hoc tribunal that is not chaired or heard by MCMC officers, but by a High Court judge together with at least two tribunal members,” she said when met by reporters after handing over aid to about 235 high-achieving SPM students at a shopping mall here yesterday.

Teo was responding to questions on the recourse available to individuals whose social media accounts are restricted.

She said the tribunal provides a more affordable avenue for complainants to seek redress without lengthy court proceedings.

Teo said MCMC operates independently and that its decisions are not influenced by any party, including the executive branch.

“Although I am a Deputy Minister and Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is the Communications Minister, we do not handle public complaints and are not involved in hearing or deciding MCMC cases.”
