Teen arrested in Tawau over obscene TikTok messages to female student

KOTA KINABALU: A teenage boy was arrested after allegedly sending obscene images to a female student in Tawau.

Tawau district police chief, Asst Commr Jasmin Hussin, said the 15-year-old suspect was arrested along Jalan Melati at about 1.10pm on Wednesday (May 6), following a report lodged by the student over the incident that occurred around 7pm on Apr 29.

He said the 13-year-old victim was at a fast-food restaurant along Jalan Apas when she received messages from the suspect via his TikTok account.

“The suspect not only sent obscene messages but also pictures of his genitals to the victim,” he said in a media statement.

Police also seized a mobile phone believed to have been used in the incident, he said, adding that the suspect had no prior criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(e) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, ACP Jasmin said.

He said police would not compromise on any form of sexual crime, including those committed via social media platforms.

ACPO Jasmin also advised parents to closely monitor their children’s use of social media to prevent exposure to cyber sexual crimes.
