Woman drowns after falling into river during hike in Gua Musang

KOTA BARU: A single mother in her 50s drowned after she is believed to have fallen into Sungai Betis while hiking in Pos Balar, Gua Musang.

She was part of a group of 11 who began their expedition on Friday (May 1), said Gua Musang OCPD Supt Sik Choon Foo.

He said the expedition covered Gunung Gerah, Gunung Bilah and Gunung Biyed.

"The incident occurred at about 7.30pm on Saturday (May 2).

"The victim is believed to have slipped and fallen into the river while passing through the Sungai Betis area in the dark," he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 5).

Supt Sik said expedition members mounted an immediate search, but the victim could not be found.

"The victim was eventually found at around 8am on Sunday (May 3), about 300m from where she fell in, unconscious and presumed dead.

"We received official information on the incident at 3.21pm the same day,” he said, adding that district police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel retrieved the victim’s body.

He said the rescuers had to travel by four-wheel-drive vehicles for about four hours and a further 10 hours on foot to reach the location.

"The case has been classified as sudden death and the body was taken to Hospital Gua Musang for a post-mortem," he added. – Bernama
