Authorities seize 420 tonnes of e-waste, scheduled waste

KLANG: More than 420 tonnes of electronic waste and scheduled waste were seized following a joint enforcement operation at Port Klang.

Port Klang Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) commander Deputy Comm Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the operation, dubbed Ops Green Shield, was carried out by the Port Klang Joint Task Force on E-Waste on Wednesday (May 6).

"A total of 13 officers from various agencies inspected several containers during the integrated operation, which began at 10.30am and ended at 1.30pm.

"We inspected 25 containers and found that 17 of them contained electronic waste weighing 396,421kg while another two containers were found to contain 24,534kg of scheduled waste," he said in a statement.

DCP Nik Ezanee said all containers will be placed in a secure location pending notices from the Environment Department (DOE) for re-export purposes.

Investigations revealed that a local company had allegedly made false declarations in customs forms for the shipment.

"Enforcement action has since been taken and the case has been handed over to the Customs Department for further action.

"Inspections on containers suspected of carrying prohibited electronic waste would continue.

"We will continue strengthening enforcement and monitoring at the nation’s entry points to safeguard border security and national interests," he said.
