KUALA LUMPUR: A Macau scam syndicate targeting victims from India has been busted with the arrest of 22 suspects.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said police raided a bungalow in the city that was being used as a call centre at about 7pm on April 23.
"The syndicate members would pose as Indian police officers and claim that the victims were being investigated for sedition against the Indian government.
"They would then dupe the victims in paying 'investigation fees'," he told a press conference here on Tuesday (May 5).
Comm Rusdi said those detained were 12 men and a woman from Pakistan, four men and two women from India, two Taiwanese men and a local man.
"We also seized various items, including 49 mobile phones, three laptops, a tablet and 12 copies of scripts for use on the victims," he said.
In another case, 13 people were detained for suspected involvement in a love scam syndicate.
"We detained five men and two women from China, two women from Myanmar, a Vietnamese woman and three locals in a raid on April 24.
"The syndicate targeted victims from the United States," Comm Rusdi said, adding that the syndicate began operating in early April.
