KUALA LUMPUR: The second KL20 2026 conference is set to be a more focused and results-oriented whole-of-nation approach taking place from September to November through a series of events in Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
The event is part of the strategic initiatives to strengthen the country's startup ecosystem and bring Kuala Lumpur to be among the top 20 global startup ecosystems by 2030.
This time, the event focuses on capital mobilisation, technology commercialization, expanding market access and the growth of Malaysian startups to the global stage.
At the KL20 2026 Pre-Launch Ceremony here on Thursday (Aug 6), Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that KL20 2026 is designed to create more tangible investment and commercial collaboration opportunities for local companies.
“KL20 is not just an ordinary conference. We want each meeting to pave the way for investment, technology commercialization and market access that can accelerate the growth of Malaysian companies globally.”
“By bringing KL20 to Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, we are connecting the strengths of industry, talent and capital in each state and region to build a stronger and more competitive national startup ecosystem,” he said.
While Malaysia’s startup ecosystem is advancing, he said coordination across multiple agencies remains a structural challenge.
Initiatives such as the single window platform have been introduced to streamline processes, but feedback indicates the current system is not yet sufficient, he also said.
As such, for KL20 2026, the strategy is to be more targeted rather than speaking broadly about “startups” or “tech.”
The original focus of KL20 2024 was Green Energy Technology, Agricultural Technology, Manufacturing and Automation and Islamic Finance.
While for KL20 2026, four additional focuses are Creative Economy, Digital Economy, Digital Games and Third Sector.
“This expansion is in line with the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan to increase economic complexity, strengthen high-growth and high-value industries and produce more “Made by Malaysia” products and services,
“The Penang segment will focus on semiconductors and electrical and electronics (E&E), sectors where Malaysia already commands a significant global footprint and is pursuing higher-value activities such as integrated circuit design and advanced packaging.
"In Johor, KL20 2026 will spotlight the creative economy and digital gaming, leveraging the state’s proximity to Singapore and the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone to develop animation, visual effects, gaming and digital content," he said.
Akmal Nasrullah added that by focusing on these sectors and fostering cross-border collaboration, KL20 2026 aims to convert Malaysia’s existing strengths into tangible startup growth, investment commitments and global market access.
The series begins with KL20 @ Penang: Silicon Surge on Sept 24, targeting the semiconductor and E&E sectors to bolster Malaysia’s position as a regional integrated circuit design hub.
KL20 @ Johor: Creative Reimagined follows on Sept 28, spotlighting the creative economy and digital gaming to support the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and create high-value jobs.
The programme culminates in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 5 with sessions on technology talent development, capital mobilisation, market access and strengthening startup ecosystem infrastructure. KL20 is a strategic pillar of Malaysia’s ambition to place Kuala Lumpur among the top 20 global startup ecosystems by 2030.digital.
