MCMC quizzes woman over fake news on diesel supply

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded the statement of an individual suspected of spreading fake news regarding claims of diesel fuel supply to the Philippines.

It said the woman, accompanied by her lawyer, came to its headquarters in Cyberjaya to have her statement recorded.

"We also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card suspected of being used to upload the content, to assist in the investigation.

"This action was taken under Section 248 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," it said in a statement on Friday (April 24).

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction, it said.

MCMC stressed that it takes a serious view of any misuse of social media platforms and digital channels to spread false information that could mislead the public.

"Firm enforcement action will be taken against any party found to have violated the law and undermined public order," it added. – Bernama
