Kampung Bahagia fire: One relief centre closed, eight still operating


KOTA KINABALU: One of the nine temporary relief centres (PPS) activated to house victims of the Kampung Bahagia fire in Sandakan was closed as of Friday (April 24) afternoon, while eight others remain operational.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said the relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Tiong Hua was closed at 3pm.

"Eight other relief centres remain operational, housing a total of 1,905 people from 384 families as of 4pm on Friday," the statement read.

On Sunday (April 19), an estimated 1,000 water houses were destroyed in a massive blaze that ripped through the village, leaving thousands of residents homeless. – Bernama
