PETALING JAYA: The under-16 squad of Destiny Eagles FC emerged champions of the Meet the World with SKF, Malaysia Tournament 2026, earning a sponsored opportunity to represent Malaysia at the Gothia Cup 2026 in Gothenburg, Sweden in July.

Battling extreme heat and fierce competition, the team clinched victory and secured a place at the world’s largest and most prestigious youth football tournament, which brings together over 40,000 players from up to 80 countries.

The tournament is part of SKF Group’s Meet the World initiative, a social programme that serves as the official pre-tournament to the Gothia Cup.

In Malaysia, the initiative reflects SKF’s long-standing commitment to youth development, having enabled young Malaysian teams to participate in the Gothia Cup since 2008.

Sweden’s Ambassador to Malaysia Niklas Wiberg presented the winning team with the trophy and medals at the tournament.

He also joined players on the field for a friendly match, underscoring the role of sport in fostering cross-cultural connection.

“SKF is proud to be the main sponsor of the Gothia Cup, as it reflects our values of teamwork, responsibility and equal opportunity,” said SKF Malaysia managing director Vignesh Nathan.

“Beyond the competition, it also offers a meaningful platform for young players to learn, connect and grow across cultures.”

The tournament is organised by SKF Malaysia, with Destiny Football Development Centre (DFDC) appointed as the technical partner for its demonstrated expertise in football development, technical governance and grassroots engagement.

Meet the World with SKF Malaysia Tournament 2026 brought together five community-based under-16 football teams, providing young players from diverse backgrounds with equal access to a professionally organised grassroot platform.

The captain of Destiny Eagles FC, Gautham Raj, 16, expressed his excitement for the upcoming future, “I am really happy because we got to prove ourselves; we are going to play in Sweden and this is such a huge opportunity to represent Malaysia.”

Head coach Walid Mohamed Saber Younis, 31, said, “Their qualification for Sweden is the result of a year of consistency and total commitment.”

Muhammad Izzmann, 16, from Putra Perwira team, said of the Meet the World tournament, “I started playing football at seven and I am really grateful for this opportunity.

“Being able to watch how other players communicate, play and express their own styles inspiresme to keep learning and improving.”

Meet the World with SKF continues to strengthen pathways for Malaysian youths to access international sporting opportunities, reinforcing the belief that football is not just about competition – but personal growth beyond the game.
