MCMC forwards 463 fake news takedown requests to platforms

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received 463 requests to remove fake news on social media platforms regarding the global supply crisis.

Government spokesman and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said all the requests received were forwarded to the respective platform providers for further action.

“As of 7am Wednesday (April 22), the total number of takedown requests stands at 463.

“Based on complaints lodged, the highest number of requests involved Facebook with 185, followed by TikTok with 142 and Threads with 131 pieces of content, among others,” said Fahmi at his weekly press conference on Wednesday.

Fahmi warned that the authorities are taking stern action against those spreading misinformation, saying that 95 investigation papers have been opened.

“The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has decided to press charges in court in one case, while in five others, the AGC has advised that compounds be issued. The remaining cases are still under investigation,” he said.
