Explain block on The Coverage's Facebook account, Teo urges MCMC

PETALING JAYA: Justification should be provided for the restriction on The Coverage Media's Facebook page from being viewed in Malaysia, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been told.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said MCMC must explain why it took such action.

"I have always maintained a policy of non-interference regarding MCMC's independent enforcement operations.

"However, I strongly urge MCMC to provide an immediate explanation for the restriction placed on The Coverage Media's Facebook page," she said in a statement on Friday (June 5).

On Thursday (June 4), The Coverage Media said the restriction on its Facebook page had been in place since June 3.

It noted that this was the first time such an action was taken against it since it was founded 10 years ago.

The Coverage Media also disputed claims that it was linked to political parties or individuals, stressing that it was fully independent.

"Those outside Malaysia or using a virtual private network (VPN) will still be able to access the page," it said.
