KUALA LUMPUR: The 113 refugees brought to the Kuala Lumpur contingent police headquarters on Tuesday (July 28) have been released in stages and relocated to locations in the federal territory, Selangor and Penang, say police.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said in a statement on Wednesday (July 29) that the group was released after undergoing final verification checks.
"The refugees were relocated to destinations across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang, with most using e-hailing services to reach their destinations," Comm Fadil said.
"These locations were selected based on the presence of relatives and acquaintances in those areas," he added.
A total of 66 refugees remained in Kuala Lumpur, while 29 were relocated to Selangor and 18 to Penang.
On Monday (July 27), the Rohingya refugees gathered outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office along Jalan Bukit Petaling after being displaced from their settlement in Penang.
The Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Immigration Department stated that 110 Rohingya refugees had gathered outside the UNHCR office, noting that a joint enforcement operation was conducted alongside the Kuala Lumpur police contingent.
