No Malaysians involved in deadly Spain train crash, says Foreign Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Malaysians were affected by the deadly high-speed train collision near Urda, Toledo, Spain, on Wednesday (Oct 28).

In a statement on Thursday (Oct 29), the ministry thanked the Spanish authorities for their assistance and cooperation with the Malaysian Embassy in Madrid.

"The ministry wishes to also convey the appreciation of the Malaysian government to the relevant Spanish authorities for their valuable assistance and cooperation to the Embassy of Malaysia in Madrid in its effort to verify whether any Malaysian nationals were affected by the incident,” it said.

Malaysia also extended its deepest condolences and sympathies to the Spanish government and people over the tragedy, which resulted in deaths and injuries.

Two passenger trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday after a computer malfunction disabled the safety system.

The crash followed another fatal accident in January ‌involving the same rail companies on the same line.

Spanish authorities said nearly 70 people had been killed, and three days of national mourning had been declared. – Bernama
