Bus driver remanded for reckless driving

ALOR GAJAH: An express bus driver, who admitted he was on methamphetamine while driving a bus with 13 passengers on board, has been remanded for four days by the Magistrate’s Court here.

The suspect’s dangerous driving along the North-South Expressway using only one hand was captured by a passenger in a video that has since gone viral.

The remand order against the 53-year-old man was issued by magistrate Dr Teoh Shu Yee yesterday.

On Monday, Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ahmad Abu Bakar confirmed the suspect had admitted to consuming methamphetamine before driving the bus.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, as well as Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident is believed to have occurred on April 15 at approximately 3.50am, when the express bus was travelling from Ipoh to Johor Baru.

Recent media reports said that police were tracking down the driver after the video surfaced. The footage, believed to have been recorded by a passenger, showed the driver leaning back in his seat and steering the bus one-handed.
